Wow! A deep dive into subject matter I haven't considered since college in the 80s, but you presented it very simply and clearly. Now that you have outlined the issues so well, I look forward to the solutions you describe in your next installment.

Thanks Sandy for another great installment. I am greatly enjoying your substack and learning from you every week! Scarcity mindset--maybe Bill Gates' recent decision to spend down his foundation will spur a change. At the very least, it's a fantastic natural experiment that will demonstrate whether spending all you've got can make a difference. Looking forward to next week. --Sara

Thanks, Sara. Bill Gates' announcement (that he intends to spend down the Gates Foundation endowment over the next 20 years) is such a powerful signal to the high net worth community about the imperative of giving now. The magnitude of the funds will also require him to get comfortable giving larger amounts with fewer strings attached, which if done explicitly, will create air cover for more risk-taking in the field. Super exciting - and as with so many things, the devil will be in the details. Giving away $200 billion in just 20 years is much harder than it looks.

I have worked with Mr. Gates' VC organization on green energy projects. When he puts his mind to something, he tends to get it done.
